WHY FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN?

A growing body of research supports the conclusion that student attendance in academic full day Kindergarten programs dramatically increases long-term student success. Studies reveal that higher average grades, higher graduation rates, and higher rates of college acceptance and completion all correlate to participation in all day Kindergarten. The difference in achievement is even more pronounced among minority and disadvantaged students, where full day Kindergarten's impact on academic performance is even more dramatically positive in full day over half day programs. Students who participate in the full day program tend to be more prepared for the increasing academic rigors of first grade and beyond, and because they feel confident, they typically retain their love for learning and for school. For students that may have learning challenges, early identification and intervention can ensure that these children quickly catch up to their grade level peers and are able to experience academic success throughout their K-12 careers.

WHAT IS COLLEGIATE'S FULL DAY PROGRAM LIKE?

Collegiate's full day Kindergarten program combines the extremely important socialization aspects of Kindergarten with a challenging but paced introduction to academic principles following the Core Knowledge sequence. Students are exposed to a broad spectrum of academic content at a very accessible level. As grades progress in the sequence, content spirals, reviews, and builds upon previously learned material to create a solid foundation with an emphasis on understanding and mastery rather than simply "covering" material. Collegiate's Kindergarten program includes the highly regarded and research-based Saxon math program, which is used throughout our school's K-12 continuum, as well as a phonics-based literacy program using, among other resources, the Modern Curriculum Press materials. Students in the full day program enjoy access to specials, which include Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology. Collegiate's full day Kindergarten program runs from 7:45am - 2:55pm.

HOW LARGE ARE YOUR KINDERGARTEN CLASSES?

Fundamental to our school's educational philosophy is the idea of small class sizes which allow individual attention from the teacher for each child. Class size is particularly crucial in Kindergarten, since for many students, it is their first experience in an educational setting outside the home. The social and behavioral development which is critical in the Kindergarten year is best facilitated in a small, close knit environment. Because Collegiate's Kindergarten program also highly values academics, a lower number of students per teacher is of increased importance. For these reasons, Collegiate Academy caps our Kindergarten classes at 20 students per class. In addition to the classroom teacher, our High School's student intern program places qualified student aides in our Kindergarten classrooms to assist in small group literacy and math work while gaining invaluable experience as leaders and role models in an educational setting.
